1,300 Acres Cleared: Wolves Push Into Finnish Villages After Google Data Center Work
Deforestation for AI infrastructure has driven wildlife toward populated areas, prompting regulatory orders for Google to halt operations.

Wolves have begun appearing in Finnish villages following large-scale forest clearing operations near Muhos and Otanmäki, according to reports emerging Thursday. The activity is linked to Google's expansion of AI data center infrastructure in the region, a move that has resulted in the destruction of approximately 1,300 acres of woodland. In response to the environmental damage, Finland's licensing authority has ordered a cessation of work on a portion of the project.
Google's country manager for Finland has issued an apology concerning clearings that were conducted without proper authorization. The company has been instructed to stop development on roughly 500 acres located southeast of Otanmäki. While Google has apologized for 816 acres of forest turned into mud, the broader scope of the project involves the removal of 1,300 acres of forest. Consequently, the area previously inhabited by wolf packs has been reduced to an expanse of mud.
The disruption to local ecosystems has led to wildlife displacement. Residents in areas bordering the construction sites report that predators are moving closer to homes. Anni Ranta, a 53-year-old whose family has resided in Otanmäki for generations, described the shift in animal behavior. "We had wolves coming into the village because all the wild animals moved out of the forest," Ranta said.
Ranta also voiced concern regarding national security, suggesting that the presence of U.S.-owned data centers could make Finland a more prominent target for Russian aggression. Other residents have raised issues regarding the environmental impact of the construction, citing excessive noise, streams that have turned brown, and the displacement of rare bird populations. The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation has characterized the company's disregard for environmental policy as unprecedented.
The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has issued an order for Google to halt development near Muhos and Otanmäki. A Google spokesperson addressed the regulatory action, stating, "We will fully comply with LVV's requests in this matter." The spokesperson added that the company looks forward to maintaining dialogue with authorities to strengthen partnerships with Finland and local organizations.
Work on the data centers remains suspended in Muhos and Kajaani as of this week. Regulators have not provided a timeline for when construction might resume or when the environmental damage will be remediated.
